Frequently Asked Questions
This page is an attempt to summarise answers to some common questions (so I don't have to keep looking the same stuff up, and can hopefully give you the quickest possible answer). Cheers, John Culf
Why do you use streetmap.co.uk for your map links?
I need a ceilidh / barn dance band for... (Can you
recommend...?)
Where can I find a piper for Burns Night / St
Andrew's Day / ...?
Would you be interesting in booking us...?
Why do you use streetmap.co.uk
for your map links?
The reason I use streetmap.co.uk is that it is very easy to position the
marker arrow precisely where it is required and to choose an appropriate zoom
level to display the location in a good context, i.e. maximum
zoom gives many street names in towns, a wider view gives a good context in
rural areas. For those people familiar with using Ordnance Survey maps,
streetmap.co.uk maps at certain zoom levels are very similar in appearance.
I need a ceilidh / barn dance band for...
(Can you recommend...?)
I'm not qualified to give recommendations as I don't dance myself (it wouldn't
be fair to do so either), and there are
so many variables: type of event, type of music required, caller, price (can
vary considerably), location, personal taste etc.. A good
online starting point is
www.flaxey-green.co.uk which includes information and contacts for many
local bands. Remember too that some bands come with a caller, some don't, some
only work with certain callers. An extensive printed list (without description) of bands and
another of callers is available in the 'What's Afoot' magazine published every 4
months by and available from the Devon Folk Committee - see
www.devonfolk.co.uk for
magazine details. I do however know people in various bands in the South Hams and beyond
if you really feel bewildered.
Where can I find a piper for Burns Night / St
Andrew's Day / ...?
Try the City of Exeter Pipes & Drums at
www.city-of-exeter-pipe-band.org (email: Pipe Major Colin Opie
piper@web-agency.com), or
the City of Plymouth Pipe Band at
www.plymouthpipeband.co.uk
and please let me know how you get on. Contact us
Would you be interesting in booking us...?
Harberton Folk is not considering any bookings beyond its currently advertised
programme
and we are unable to give advice concerning other booking possibilities in the
area. You could try looking through some of the other South-West venues listed
on the Links page or the Diary listings on the
Home page for other ideas. Thank you for your interest
in Harberton Folk.
